The
reef structure prevents large waves from
ever reaching, and eroding the shoreline, so it
is referred to as a "barrier" reef. Ours is the
third largest barrier reef system in the world.
Since the shore erosion is prevented, there
are few, if any, "natural" beaches in the upper
keys. Beaches are found where the reef
structure is not as well-developed and where
the keys are farther apart. Greater distance
between "islands" allows tidal flow, as well
as waves, to deteriorate the shoreline and
beaches are formed.
Some
hotels in the area have brought in
sand to create their own beaches. |
